God, Min Hua is adorable.
I think the pinyin-plus-translation is working well here.

Your call on the pinyin-versus-English word balloons/text boxes. It certainly adds authenticity. The webcomic “Megatokyo” simply uses English word balloons with carats at beginning/end of dialogue to indicate an English translation of a non-English language. Example:
This is the first time I can remember Min Hua and Xiu Mei doing anything remotely sisterly together in a positive, friendly way. Would love to see more of it.

Twin Dragons colors the Italian in green bubbles with a small Italian flag on the corner. Any one of these works, I like the pinyin because it’s pretty natural and gives us the same viewpoint as Edmund with the translation on the side.
The older miniseries Shogun (with Richard Chamberlin) starts out with you not understanding the Japanese, (same as the main character) but slowly transitions to the character speaking English as he “learns the language.”
The Hunt For Red October starts out in Russian, then switches to English in an early scene as the political officer reads the passage from the Bible. The switch occurs on the word “Armageddon”, which is the same in both languages. I found this really jarring.
