Incident 284 Research Notes – 024:
A. Fairchilde: ... Don't see that very often.
A. Fairchilde: You seein' this buddy? That's some quality advice, actually.
M. Winsaia: This isn't the first one like it.
M. Winsaia: Did... Did you sleep through Sedona?

At least one more on this topic before we move on.

OK, TOTALLY impressed with Jane here.
Ryan Gindlesperger
Jane here could single-handedly keep the ‘tragic/terrible parent-child relationships in comics’ trope away from Mastery. Fortunately, she’s not doing it alone. Ari would love for me to put out more content of just the parents doing their thing. Time, as always, is the deciding factor on that though…
I’ve read hundreds of stories with absent or outright terrible parents. Gobs of stories full of first romantic moments and the ‘will they won’t they’ tension. I’m kind of happy that Sarah and Ash’s story, as well as the main arc, doesn’t have much of either of those. The rough parenting thing makes me sad because of how relatable it is for so many people. The focus on the creation of a relationship and then nothing of what comes after makes me sad because that’s like… the fun stuff! The best part! … it’s just not often as dramatic, which is less-interesting storytelling I suppose.
Mastery will have a bit more focus on keeping active romantic relationships going than making new ones… at least in the Sarah and Ash camp. Min Hua, Xiu Mei, Rei and a few others we haven’t met yet have a bit of work ahead of them on that front.

I’m intrigued by your inclusion of Xiu Mei in the asian group. It seriously felt like her arc was at an end with Min Hua x Rei dominating in the future. (the picture of her at the New Years’ celebration could have been a “visiting home” arc)
Ryan Gindlesperger
Oh, Rei and Min Hua will definitely play a massive role. I kind of feel bad for Sarah and Ash, given just how much more time I spend thinking about everything that’s going to happen with Rei and Min.
Also, Xiu Mei definitely went through the entirety of the development arc presented in the prequel… but she still has a hefty role to play in what’s to come. When we read this comment, we both kind of giggled maniacally.

Regarding the research notes: is there more to Ash in Sedona?
Ryan Gindlesperger
That’s where Ash, Jane, and Mark were living while they were away and helping Jane’s mother get situated.
There was plenty of growing that happened down there, but nothing that’s going to show up unless it’d be in side-stories or the odd flashback.
That’s when Ash would have gotten the first-stage talk that accompanies puberty.

Oh, one more comment. The thing that is magical about this family is Jane’s comments that “Sare’s my little girl too.” and Sarah being “best friend/sibling in all ways aside of blood relation” to Ash. They are indeed as close as sisters, and it is somewhat surprising that they would have a romantic relationship with someone they grew up with. (Possibly the separation through the elementary/middle school times fostered that, pardon me, just rambling here.)
Anyhow, I love the attitude of the parents/kids in this family.
Ryan Gindlesperger
The separation is part of what facilitated that, most definitely.
Like most deeper relationships, it’s a cascade of chances, coincidences, and unlikely events that culminated in the two making that kind of connection.
Had it not been for Ash’s forwardness, there’s a good chance things would have never progressed to that point.

Agreeing with others here; that’s some A-Grade advice.

I assume that Jane didn’t bother with haircolor given all the hell of the move, buying the house, etc. I personally think this looks much better on her anyway, it goes well with her skin tone.
Ryan Gindlesperger
Oh yeah. She looks great naturally. I think she did it just to make her Mum happy while they were in Sedona. She doesn’t mind it being like this, but she also really likes playing with the colors.
All-Purpose Guru
That was an oblique reference to you choosing a good color palette for Jane.

How much better would the world be if conversations like this were the norm?
Ryan Gindlesperger
Right?
